Cheerful Knitting Blog

My First Knitting Project...

... was not the scarf in the photo above. That photo is from Pixabay, just because I felt this blog post needed a picture.

Unfortunately I don't have any photos of my early knitting projects. I probably started with a swatch of some sorts where I just practiced casting on, knitting, purling, and casting-off.

I learned how to knit at a young age, so young that I can't remember how I actually started. My mom or my grandma probably showed me how to do it but we also had lessons at school. That was in the 1980ies (feel free to do the math to find out how old I am). We did a lot of crafting in elementary school, and everybody in class, girls as well as boys, got to do both fiber crafts and other types of craft. I remember that I had just as much fun with cutting and glueing as I did with knitting and crocheting.

So, even though I can't remember exactly how it all started, I do remember the first really usable item I knitted.

I was 9 or 10 years old when we knitted a hat in class. The teacher gave us a list of the needed supplies, and my mom took me yarn shopping. It probably was acrylic yarn because that was cheap and all the rage in that era.

I still remember the colors I picked, turquoise and yellow. And it occurs to me right now, as I am typing this, that those are the colors of my brand! It seems I've always been partial to this combination...

Anyway, we knitted this hat in the round, probably using DPNs because circular needles were a rarity back then. Today the general consensus seems to be that DPNs are hard to use, but I never felt that way. Maybe because I got used to them such a long time ago?
We used a pattern of little squares in two colors, but we knitted with only one color per round. The stitches in the other color were slipped. Today I know that this technique is called Mosaic Knitting, but as a kid I didn't pay any attention to the name, I was just pleased with knitting a pretty pattern.

I seem to remember that the hat had a rolled edge instead of a ribbed hatband, but I am not completely sure about that. I really wish there was a photo!

The funny thing is, I can still remember the colors and the stitch pattern but can't remember ever wearing that hat, and I don't know where it ended up.

Maybe, one time, I'll re-create this hat and write up a pattern for it. And then I'll make sure to wear it!

What was your first knitting project? Do you still have it, maybe even use it?
